“In February 1519, Hernando Cortez set sail on the final leg of a voyage that was to take him from Cuba, a stopover, to the shores of the Yucatán. He commanded 11 ships, with more than 500 soldiers, 100 sailors, and 16 horses, bound for Mexico to take the world’s richest treasure.
The precious jewels, gold, silver, and sculptures sheltered on this limestone peninsula had been hoarded by the same army for over centuries. But, with only 600 men — none of whom had availed themselves with protective armor – conquering an empire so extensive in its territories could only be undertaken by a man with a death wish.
Cortez was well-aware of this fact. And it was for this reason, that he took a different approach when he landed on the land of the Mayans.
Instead of charging through cities and forcing his men into immediate battle, Hernando Cortez stayed on the beach and awoke the souls of his men in the form of an emblazoned speech that would only just be 3 words in which Cortés’ murmured, that would change the history of the New World.
As they listened, Cortez leaned in and said three simple words that changed everything: Burn the boats.
It was a decision that should have backfired. Because if Cortez and his men were on the brink of defeat, there wasn’t an exit strategy in place to save their lives. Remarkably though, the command to burn the boats had an opposite effect on his men because now, they were left with only 2 choices — die, or ensure victory.
We know today, how Cortez’ decision to burn his boats panned out. Hernando Cortez became the first man in 600 years to successfully conquer Mexico.”

I’m not a D.C. and don’t play one on TV (hey that rhymed!)
Here’s why:
I grew up in Virginia and remember the financial struggle my parents dealt with after losing their home in foreclosure because of a bad business deal my Father’s boss put him in.
We went to live with my Grandparents in their basement apartment (UHHHGG), it was nice enough with a kitchenette, bathroom and 1 bedroom. This was pretty-tight quarters with my parents and sister; …and I kid you not, since there was not enough room, I slept in the workshop. Right next to the lathe and workbench!
I didn’t realize it them, but this time in my life really made me realize that I would do everything I could to keep this from ever happening to my family. (I have a Wife and 4 kiddos) Looking back, it actually was a motivating experience!
After college, ultimately I spent 11 years in the mortgage banking industry and CRUSHED IT! (As a matter of fact, I achieved many awards and trips and even was the #1 Producer in the entire country 2 years in a row for the major financial institution I worked for…BOOO-YAHH!!)
But then…the “Credit Crisis” hit our economy in October 2007, and my income dropped bad… not just trickled down….TANKED! It became clear to me that business would never be the same and I decided to get my MBA in Marketing to re-design my life and career. After many ups-and-downs, I emerged with a new-found tenacity that cannot be broken!
