Why You Should Have A Business Plan For Your Small Business

Business plans are usually things that an entrepreneur thinks about last.  Instead, you should write your business plan as soon as possible.
I am not suggesting that you wait to start your business until your business plan is perfect. Then you will never start your business because you will be stuck in analysis paralysis land where you agonize over every single detail of your business, and you will miss out on profitable opportunities while you do that.  Here are some reasons to create a business plan for your small business.

A business plan will provide your small business with direction.  If you don’t have a business you will be saying, “We’re lost, but we’re making good time.” In other words, you won’t know where your business is supposed to be going, but you will be getting there quickly.  A business plan will put your goals in black and white for you and your whole company to see.  You will know exactly which projects to take and which ones to pass on because you will have your business plan to look at.

A business plan can alert you to financial problems before they become a crisis.  If you have a clear business plan with reasonable financial projections, you have a road map for the future.   Looking at your business plan every so often can remind you of where you are supposed to be versus where you are.
You do not want to wait until you get into a crisis to try to figure out ways to get out of it.  Instead, you want to have things in place beforehand so that you can make a quick correction and a speedy recovery.

Yes, I know business plans are not the most exciting thing in the world to sit down and write.  You would probably rather sit down and write your sales letter or do your taxes.  A business plan is important because it is the foundation for your business.  Once you have a strong foundation, the sky is the limit for your business.

Once done, you will not only have a great sense of accomplishment and direction….but you must schedule time to review and study your own plan on a regular basis. This is the only way that you will know if you are on track.
